PHILOSOPHIES THAT GUIDE LIBRARY WORK AT Ortega

A primary goal of the library’s collection development process is to provide access to a variety of books for all students in Pre3 to Grade 6 across interest, maturity, and reading abilities. The Ortega Library serves all students and families. In that regard, the collection is meant to be as inclusive as possible and "ensure students have access to humanizing educational spaces and rich opportunities to learn." In addition, I strive to ensure students are provided with books that serve as “windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors.” This is based on the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. More about her work can be found here: https://ehe.osu.edu/news/listing/rudine-sims-bishop-diverse-childrens-books/

*New for 2023-24, we are utilizing Accelerated Reader (AR) as an incentive to earn points for reading. We want all Ortega students to read more!

ECSE, PK3, PK4, Kinder & 1st grade - 1 book each week...keep books in classroom.

2nd grade & 3rd grade - 2 books

4th grade & 5th grade - 3 books

6th grade - 4 books

Grades 2nd-6th take books home and keep in their backpack.

Books come to school everyday, books are not left at home. Books are returned at least every 2 weeks or the books are considered late. Every week, each 2nd-6th grade student needs to select at least one AR book (read it and take a quiz for it--and earn points!)
