AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—is a program designed to support students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID educators prepare students to succeed in high school, college and other postsecondary opportunities.

AVID Elementary is for grades K–5 and closes the opportunity gap before it begins. By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID Elementary teachers create a ripple effect in later grades. Empowering elementary students to develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Children learn about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. AVID also helps elementary students build awareness of their strengths and areas for growth. AVID Elementary students take structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers. AVID students learn to write, inquire, collaborate, organize and read at the desired level, and they learn how to build partnerships for lifelong success. They learn to accept a culture of high expectations and how to set, monitor and celebrate goals. The strong college-going culture on an AVID Elementary campus encourages students to think about their college and career plans. Schools cover their walls with college pennants and banners, and educators speak about their college experiences. College and careers are no longer foreign concepts, and teachers provide the academic foundation students need to be on a path for college and career success.

The Mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students will:

  • Succeed in rigorous curriculum
  • Complete a rigorous college preparatory path
  • Enter mainstream activities of the school
  • Increase their enrollment in four - year colleges
  • Become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
